Navigating Difference collects and reveals the thoughts of thirty-seven people selected by the editor from public sector organisations involved in the promotion and dissemination of culture in the UK. The book's layout emphasises the different voices and viewpoints of the authors. Each author was visually represented; ensuring the ethnicity and expertise of each author was clearly expressed.

Thumbnail portrait photographs were present wherever the author was referenced in the book. We commissioned a new digital artwork by digital artist Fang Liu for the cover. Each colour represents a particular emotional response by the audience to a stage performance of Macbeth. The colours are based on Psychologist R. Plutchif’s theory that there are eight primary emotional states. The reductive simplicity of this idea is undermined by Fang Liu's cover art which highlights visually how a simple idea taken to the fullest extent results in an unusually complex and subtle pattern. It echoes and supports the book's proposition nicely. The book was edited by Heather Maitland.
